THE URBAN GARDEN, BIRD NETTING, AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

THE URBAN GARDEN, BIRD NETTING, AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

THE URBAN GARDEN AS A TOOL FOR MAKING CITIZENS ECOLOGICALLY AWARE

Do you want to protect your garden from birds in a sustainable manner?  What better way than with bird netting as a part of environmental education?

If we posses an urban garden that is sustainable and ecologically sound. We have the potential of showing anyone the results of all the work involved.  This work can be the germination of a tomato seed. The maturing of the tomato or any other vegetable, and, finally. The moment of proudly showing the sustainably produced product and being able to show that none of the inputs caused any harm to the environment, animals, or to people.

The fact of the matter is that upon becoming part of an ecologically sustainable way of doing things that is in harmony with nature, if we talk about it with the people around us, we get a positive response from them.  On many occasions they find themselves extraordinarily disposed to receive new knowledge and adopt attitudes and values that are more environmentally sustainable. In Spain there are more and more urban gardens being developed: gardens as free time initiatives, community green zones, recovery of a rural environment, or a venue of some other type.  Above all else it is necessary to keep in mind what urban gardens can contribute towards the environmental education of citizens.

Advantages of urban garden

Those people who grow an urban garden can in the process, thanks to environmental education, enable others:

  • to be aware of environmental problems.
  • to become conscious of the impact of our activities on the balance in nature.
  • to engage in values and attitudes such as coexistence, self-governance, solidarity, or working together cooperatively as a group.
  • to create affectionate bonds with nature and increase the ability to enjoy the outdoors.
  • to develop the ability to plan, to resolve problems, and to prevent unwanted consequences.
  • to promote initiative, responsibility, and relations with others in close proximity in the outdoors.
  • to gain in the understanding of more and more complex basic concepts of how nature functions.

Environmental education professionals, that have the possibility of working in urban gardens, have at their disposal a potent resource for bringing up all kinds of topics, always working from personal experience and direct observation. In the case of environmental education, we referred to gardening in harmony with nature In order to achieve this. I must also consider the materials that I am going to use.  In a lot of cases, the material used causes a lot of harm to the environment, to people, and to animals.

I want to protect the orchard from bird attack

I want to protect the garden from attack by birds.  And i can protect the garden using bird barrier netting, but not just any netting.  The netting has to be able to withstand the sun and water, be long lasting, and not harm the birds.  If birds do not become tangled up in it and are able to continue their flight, it is a net that is in harmony with the natural environment.  Or if I want to protect against animals such as deer, I will install deer fencing

Another matter for a terrace garden or an urban garden is how to trellis the crops, be it with or without training clips.  All this can be retrofitted with the experience of a neighbor who is also active in this movement.
