SOG and SCROG

Introduction

SOG and SCROG: While it is not necessary to lose interest in flowering or the flowering stage, we do need to be sure that we have grown large, healthy plants in just as short a growth period or vegetative state as at all possible. 

  • The size and health of plants will determine in a large part their total performance. 
  • The idea is that we raise the plants after germination during their growth stage just as rapidly as possible to change them into green shrubs that are robust and vigorous.

In order to ensure that a robust stalk develops, it is advisable to have a fan turned on and running in the growing space. Nitrogen deficiency is easy to detect:  the tips of the leaves begin to turn yellow and the yellowing continues toward the stalk of the plant.  The plant absorbs all the nitrogen from these leaves because it does not have enough elsewhere to maintain itself.  The old leaves get drained and the nutrients are carried to where new foliage is being produced.

Potassium deficiency is the most common deficiency that one ends up with, and it is recognizable by the fact that the leaves turn yellow from the outside edge towards the interior until reaching the main vein in the center of the leaf. 

During the flowering stage is when there is more chance of ending up with a phosphorous and/or potassium deficiency.  A phosphorous deficiency is the most difficult to recognize, but the plants become somewhat dark, almost purple, all over.  Flowering of the plant also gets interrupted and so it results in smaller buds.  What is most important is knowing whether or not these deficiencies in the short run are detrimental for the plants. Deficiencies are thus, in reality, simple to learn to identify and easy to remedy. Upon incorporating more food for your plants, you will be able to see the yellow leaves become a beautiful green again.

When your plants have enough of everything, they will then have a bright green color and the leaves will have a healthy shine to them.  This indicates that they are growing optimally and the flowering that we have been striving for can take place.  If a little while after this observation nutrient levels are not increased, then certain deficiencies will come into play, or your plants will not be so vigorous anymore.

Once you have managed to get an enchanting, dark specimen of super-green and vigorous plants, it is time to look the other way and let them be.  Incorporating too many nutrients into the crop could lead to excessive fertilization.  After all, the plants now have more than sufficient food in their soil medium.  Therefore it is better to wait to give them more food until it is seen that the plants are once again developing a more pale green color.

What should be done about over-fertilization of a cannabis plant? If you are not sure if your plants need another feeding or not, the best thing to do is wait a little longer. Also, there are new tools such as pH and EC meters that are promising for making things easier for growers. It is good to keep a record of how many days until fertilizing again. If it only takes a couple of days, for example, you can make a mental note, feed them once again, and they will again regain their dark-green color. Once this period has been established they can be fed with confidence every two days. After all, we have already tested how much time can pass before again being fertilized.

Different methods of growing the crop

The two most common methods for growing cannabis plants are called SOG (Sea Of Green) and SCROG (SCReen Of Green).

SOG  This method is undertaken when there are a lot of plants per square meter and then giving them only a few days, or even none at all, before having them go directly to the flowering stage.  By doing this the plants produce few or almost no lateral branches and limit their vertical growth.  Then you will end up having a very tall plant with a pole of buds from top to bottom.  This method is especially appreciated and used by commercial growers.  By letting your plants grow a little more, they have time to develop lateral branches.  What follows is that you get dense plants.  This method is used a lot by the biggest growers.

SCROG

SCROG  If you only have a few plants per square meter, Than you can choose to use the SCROG method.  In this method, the main shoot of the plant gets eliminated.  It is a way of clipping or cutting off the main stalk.  The main shoot is found in the center of the plant on the main stem.  It is responsible for making new leaves and lateral branches.

When this head is cut off, the plant then quits growing taller.  What then happens is that the plant puts its energy into the remaining lateral branches.  As a result, the lateral branches get stronger in their growth.  In this way, a wide plant is achieved with lateral branches that have roughly the same height.  The majority of the shoots, in turn, are to be found on the top side, which is what most of the light favors.  The plant ends up being smaller in height but bigger around and more vigorous. 

It is better to make whatever covering quite early–after two weeks of growth and at least one week before flowering is scheduled to begin–if you want to benefit from what this method has to offer.  The plant should be given a little time to adjust to the process rather than doing it abruptly.  Doing it this way, the largest possible harvest is achieved from just a few plants.

The net effect

A scrogger (a proficient practitioner of this method) will fasten plastic netting over the plants onto which the lateral branches will then be trained so as to have them nicely spread out with uniform separation between them.  Doing this maximizes the amount of light that each branch receives.  Once in the flowering stage, a beautiful top layer of buds results. 

The Sea of Green method ends up with one single enormous bud on the plant and a few of average size or smaller.  The Screen of Green method, however, ends up with a pile of middle-sized buds.  Another advantage is that there is a lower probability of an infection of mold developing since there are a mass of small buds rather than one large one.  Therefore, if you live in a very humid climate or if you have problems with humidity being too high within the growing space, the SCROG method is a good way to reduce the possibility of having the crop rot.  The yield from the two methods, when done correctly, is considered to be practically the same.   The variety of the plant also makes a difference.  Certain types of plants are better grown with one style than the other.

If the SOG method is used, it is better to grow a plant that is known to produce a huge head of budding fruit, that can form elongated buds, and has small lateral branches. 

On the other hand, for the SCROG method, a variety is desirable that makes a mass of lateral branches and, above all, that produces a mass of buds on them and grows on a sturdy stalk.  If you decide to go with the Screen of Green method, then it is advisable to eliminate the lower branches of the plant. 

We want to be sure that just as much energy as possible is directed to the upper branches where the light from the lamps will bathe them.  The lower lateral branches get little or no light and for that reason form fluffy, light buds. 

After getting rid of the lower branches, better air circulation will result under the plants and all available energy will be sent to the upper branches. 

The same thing can also be done with the SOG method if it is observed that the foliage is becoming too dense. After eliminating the lower lateral branches of a crop being grown the SOG way, the upper branches develop better, extending themselves and thereby growing closer to the source of light and as a result getting heavier buds.  There exist many variations of these methods with which one, of course, can experiment.  Some growers cut off all the lateral branches during the growth stage and only leave 4 – 6 of the most developed branches on the plant.

Once a good basic growing technique has been learned outdoors, then it would be worthwhile getting EC and pH meters just for the sake of making things easier for oneself and in order to raise bigger plants with better buds.

Different methods of growing the crop

The two most common methods for growing cannabis plants are called SOG (Sea Of Green) and SCROG (SCReen Of Green).

SOG  This method is undertaken when there are a lot of plants per square meter and then giving them only a few days, or even none at all, before having them go directly to the flowering stage.  By doing this the plants produce few or almost no lateral branches and limit their vertical growth.  Then you will end up having a very tall plant with a pole of buds from top to bottom.  This method is especially appreciated and used by commercial growers.  By letting your plants grow a little more, they have time to develop lateral branches.  What follows is that you get dense plants.  This method is used a lot by the biggest growers.

SCROG

SCROG  If you only have a few plants per square meter, Than you can choose to use the SCROG method.  In this method, the main shoot of the plant gets eliminated.  It is a way of clipping or cutting off the main stalk.  The main shoot is found in the center of the plant on the main stem.  It is responsible for making new leaves and lateral branches.

When this head is cut off, the plant then quits growing taller.  What then happens is that the plant puts its energy into the remaining lateral branches.  As a result, the lateral branches get stronger in their growth.  In this way, a wide plant is achieved with lateral branches that have roughly the same height.  The majority of the shoots, in turn, are to be found on the top side, which is what most of the light favors.  The plant ends up being smaller in height but bigger around and more vigorous. 

It is better to make whatever covering quite early–after two weeks of growth and at least one week before flowering is scheduled to begin–if you want to benefit from what this method has to offer.  The plant should be given a little time to adjust to the process rather than doing it abruptly.  Doing it this way, the largest possible harvest is achieved from just a few plants.

The net effect

A scrogger (a proficient practitioner of this method) will fasten plastic netting over the plants onto which the lateral branches will then be trained so as to have them nicely spread out with uniform separation between them.  Doing this maximizes the amount of light that each branch receives.  Once in the flowering stage, a beautiful top layer of buds results. 

The Sea of Green method ends up with one single enormous bud on the plant and a few of average size or smaller.  The Screen of Green method, however, ends up with a pile of middle-sized buds.  Another advantage is that there is a lower probability of an infection of mold developing since there are a mass of small buds rather than one large one.  Therefore, if you live in a very humid climate or if you have problems with humidity being too high within the growing space, the SCROG method is a good way to reduce the possibility of having the crop rot.  The yield from the two methods, when done correctly, is considered to be practically the same.   The variety of the plant also makes a difference.  Certain types of plants are better grown with one style than the other.

If the SOG method is used, it is better to grow a plant that is known to produce a huge head of budding fruit, that can form elongated buds, and has small lateral branches. 

On the other hand, for the SCROG method, a variety is desirable that makes a mass of lateral branches and, above all, that produces a mass of buds on them and grows on a sturdy stalk.  If you decide to go with the Screen of Green method, then it is advisable to eliminate the lower branches of the plant. 

We want to be sure that just as much energy as possible is directed to the upper branches where the light from the lamps will bathe them.  The lower lateral branches get little or no light and for that reason form fluffy, light buds. 

After getting rid of the lower branches, better air circulation will result under the plants and all available energy will be sent to the upper branches. 

The same thing can also be done with the SOG method if it is observed that the foliage is becoming too dense. After eliminating the lower lateral branches of a crop being grown the SOG way, the upper branches develop better, extending themselves and thereby growing closer to the source of light and as a result getting heavier buds.  There exist many variations of these methods with which one, of course, can experiment.  Some growers cut off all the lateral branches during the growth stage and only leave 4 – 6 of the most developed branches on the plant.

Algunos productores recortan todas las ramas laterales durante la fase de crecimiento y dejan solo las 4-6 ramas más desarrolladas detrás de la planta. Para hacer que las plantas se sientan bienvenidas y tan cómodas como sea posible, se aconseja que siempre se les riegue con agua tibia, alrededor de 23 grados centígrados. Para nosotros esta temperatura todavía se siente bastante fresca.

In order to make the plants feel welcome and to not shock them, it is advisable to always water or irrigate them with lukewarm water–about 23 degrees centigrade  (75 degrees Fahrenheit).  This, of course, is less than body temperature.  Cold water will cause the roots of our plants to recede and enter into a state of shock, delaying growth and the flowering of the plant as a result.  It is important to point out that the growth stage is just as important as the flowering stage, if not more.  It serves as the base for a healthy flowering stage.  The better that the results are in the growth stage, the quicker it will be that they reach optimum size in the pre-flowering (stretch) phase.  This reduces the amount of time needed for the plant to grow which not only saves time but also electricity.
