The moon phases and the tutoring of vegetables.

How to improve crop efficiency and production by paying attention to the moon.

Since ancient times the moon has influenced the land. Farmers use it as guide for different farming activities, to them it is the best existing calendar. However many people still ask themselves if there is indeed a link between agricultural labor and lunar phase. It is important to highlight that the most important farming activities are intimately related to astronomic influences.  Activities such as manuring, pruning, lacing, trellising plants and harvesting, are some examples of this farmer-astro relationship, which has been studied and acknowledged both by country people as for the most experienced agronomists. The moon is recognized and acknowledged as very influential by farmers before taking any actions regarding their crops. Yet there is an explanation for this matter. The moon influences the crops in a way if taking into account vegetables could develop more efficiently. We will describe in a simple way how this takes place using cucumber and tomato as examples. The moon has four main phases that determine many chores and activities that are regulated by the moon effects  on the water, whether inside the plant or in its substratum.  Crescent moon Crescent moon is when it is shaped as letter D. On this phase it starts to shine greater light amount causing water and sap to start going up. On this period the plant´s growth is balanced  and reaches every part of the vegetable tissues. Sowing is recommended on this phase because there is more light exposure and the water movement on the soil is higher which will make it easier for the seeds to germinate. Full moon (and Waning gibbous)  This phase is characterized for its light abundance, during this period roots will have less development, more water on the plant´s inside which will make sap and water flow to be concentrated on branches, flowers, fruits and foliage making this one more productive. This is a crucial moment for vegetables and it is not recommended to harvest at this point since protection systems will be diluted and diseases may appear. What is recommended at this moment is transplanting. If its done at this phase our cucumber and tomatoes will grow faster and have stronger foliage.        Last quarter (and Waning Crescent) At this phase the moon will be shaped as “C” letter reducing its light emission being crescent moon´s counterpart. At this point sap and water start to go down from the foliage, increasing growth rate in the roots , and reducing it in foliage. By having a strong root the success level for our vegetable crop increases and not just that, our cucumber and tomato plant will be able to concentrate energy and resources in other activities such as fruit nutrition. During this phase it is also good to transplant plants since roots will grow faster and better.  New moon (and Waxing Crescent)  This is one of the most important periods for every farmer. At his point the moon emits very little light, reaching very low levels of visibility. This is a time for the plant to rest. Roots and foliage are almost not growing at all. This moment is used by the farmer to work on their vegetables doing things such as trimming, weed, manuring and vegetable tutoring being this activity our focus. Farmer works on these matters since its the time the plants are more resistant and adaptable to weather changes without damages. Tutoring on this moon phase will help vegetables to adapt to its support, wheter its pole, agricultural raffia or what its more recommendable trellis which will give solid support to Your crops. Trellis are wonderful aids for supporting guide crops like cucumber, melons, zucchini among others. This work is very important since it makes improves efficiency on farming.  HORTOMALLAS trellises are healthier than traditional agricultural polymer raffia, since it prevents manpower from constantly manipulating the plants, besides it can use the same poles or even less than the raffia.  If we add using HORTOMALLAS the correct setting of it taking into consideration the moon phases , we will not only have a better harvest, it will also be healthier and will grow faster. After reading this we are sure you will pay closer attention to the moon before your next agricultural endeavor.

HORTOMALLAS manufactures and markets crop support nettings (trellising and tutoring as alternatives to the raffia twine labor intensive traditional system) that increase crop quality. Our Mission is to: INCREASE VEGETABLE CROP YIELD AND PROFITABILITY TO ALL THOSE VEGETABLES THAT NEED TUTORING AND SUPPORT USING NETTING INSTEAD OF RAFFIA. Since 1994 we help professional growers and farmers improve their cucumber, tomatoes, melon, zucchini, bean, chile, peppers crops where trellises and supports are needed. HORTOMALLAS is the ideal system for cucurbitacea and solonacea to improve their phytosanitary conditions, while increasing the solar exposure and the brix degrees. Besides the obvious labor costs savings, the use of HORTOMALLAS increases the life span of the plant, allowing longer periods of harvests and of a greater quality.
