MAKE YOUR TUTORING PROCESS EASIER AND FASTER BY USING TOMATO SUPPORT NETTINGS

HORTOMALLAS tomato support nettings even improve the phytosanitary conditions of your sowing

Traditional tomato staking has recently become disused, being replaced for a better and, in many ways, cheaper method: Tomato support nettings. Common staking requires a lot of time and labor during the entire process, increasing expenses and slowing the arrival of the harvest. In addition to this, once plants start to grow it is needed to tutor new stems every few weeks, spending even more in materials and causing several damages to the plant. Raffia twine, which is usually used for this task, lowers the quality of your sowing sanitary conditions by harboring bacteria and multiple pathogens that become very difficult to eradicate with fungicides. Tomato support nettings work as a really better staking method since it is not necessary to use raffia to tutor the plant, because it is trained to grow leaning on the trellis itself. Trellises improve phytosanitary conditions as well since it is impossible for bacteria or plagues to lodge and multiply themselves on nylon.

Most used stakes are wooden, which due to its low price are preferred over plastic one. However, these stakes in particular put in danger harvest’s health by increasing humidity levels (when wet) and also working as a source of infections, just as raffia does. In the other hand, tomato support nettings provide the plant of adequate ventilation and good drainage of water; they even turn out to be more stable than stakes in the action of strong winds. Nylon trellises are a good option if you do not want to invert so much money and save time all way through. With this method you keep the sowing more organized, harvest becomes easier also, and the whole growing and production process can be shortened up to 60% compared to other techniques.

Another advantage of the HORTOMALLA tomato support netting is that, unlike other procedures, it is very long lasting and can be used up to 4 times if wanted; it just needs to be shaken and washed. Even if one of the threads were cut by mistake this would not affect the trellis structure, because of the way it is done, something that does not happens when using raffia for tutoring. Nevertheless, it is important to consider that despite of the strength  of these trellises, it is no recommendable to use them if you are not going to prune the plant, because this could bring future complications, not only related the resistance of the mesh, but to the easy manipulation of the plant too. For these cases, it is better to use tomato cages which, because of its shape and the material they are made of, work better for leafier plants. Nevertheless, if you prefer to use this procedure, and want to manipulate plants as less as possible, you should make a double trellis wall that give a better support to the plant.

The amount of needed trellis may vary depending on the genus. Higher varieties of tomato plants may need 6.5 feet tall tomato support nettings. Any way, if you needed to know how much trellis you would need, you could use our calculator widget to find out. You only need to enter the number of hectares you have and the distance in meters between each groove.

Hortomallas Hortomallas

HORTOMALLAS manufactures and markets crop support nettings (trellising and tutoring as alternatives to the raffia twine labor intensive traditional system) that increase crop quality. Our Mission is to: INCREASE VEGETABLE CROP YIELD AND PROFITABILITY TO ALL THOSE VEGETABLES THAT NEED TUTORING AND SUPPORT USING NETTING INSTEAD OF RAFFIA. Since 1994 we help professional growers and farmers improve their cucumber, tomatoes, melon, zucchini, bean, chile, peppers crops where trellises and supports are needed. HORTOMALLAS is the ideal system for cucurbitacea and solonacea to improve their phytosanitary conditions, while increasing the solar exposure and the brix degrees. Besides the obvious labor costs savings, the use of HORTOMALLAS increases the life span of the plant, allowing longer periods of harvests and of a greater quality. Call us, our crop specialists will help you with specialized attention in the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula!
