Acoustical devices for preventing bird damage in vineyards

Acoustical devices work in one of two ways. Either they produce a loud boom or they produce natural sounds of birds in distress, predator calls, or other natural sounds.

Bird bangers or propane canons do not actually shoot anything. They just emit a loud boom that is intend to frighten away any birds.

One problem with these devices is that birds habituate, which means that birds become accustomed to them, loud as they are, until their hunger for grapes overrides their ever-diminishing nervousness about the devices.

Another problem is that the loud booms are annoying for anyone living close by and that does not make for good relationships with the neighbors, if there are any.

Devices such as those by Bird  Guard® broadcast recorded distress calls, the sounds of predators attacking those birds in distress, and perhaps other natural sounds.

The particular bird calls and sounds that are program to be play will depend on the target species that need to be scare out of the vineyard.

These devices can be quite sophisticate:  they can be solar power with wireless multiple speakers and be program with a variety of sounds. That can be broadcast randomly, at random intervals for random periods, and be randomly rotate through various speakers.

All this randomness is an attempt to avoid habituation.

Visual devices for preventing damage in vineyards

Visual devices to scare off birds include reflective tape, sheets of aluminum foil, scare-eye balloons, predator bird/animal cutouts, and scarecrows.

Reflective tape have be found to be effective when the area to be protect is saturate with the tape by filling in any voids in foliage at the top of the canopy and also by hanging it on a perimeter wire.

Some people find a visual device combined with an acoustical one to be more effective than either one by itself.

A problem with visual deterrents, when they are only located in areas of a vineyard where birds have been a problem, is that birds simply move on to another area. Habituation is also a problem.

Anti-Bird Net
Bird netting protects your vineyard without disturbing neighbors or harming birds and other wildlife.

Bird control netting is a physical barrier for birds

Acoustical and visual deterrents offer degrees of protection. Correctly installed bird netting provides complete bird protection by being a physical barrier that makes it impossible for birds to be able to get to the grapes in a vineyard.

It can be install as side netting, drape netting (single row or multiple rows), or canopy netting.

Whatever netting method is use, care must be taken that no openings in the netting are left for birds to be able to slip through from above or from below.

Must be careful, especially with side netting, that does not rest on grape clusters, making it possible for birds to peck at the grapes through the mesh.

This should not be a problem with canopy netting which gets install like a ceiling over the grapevines on a web of cables supported by poles.

Side netting and drape netting does not require a support structure other than the grapevine trellis itself. Netting a whole vineyard may seem like a daunting task.

While it may be possible for one person (although two or three would be much better!)

to install side netting or drape netting entirely by hand, there are devices and equipment available to facilitate the task.

With machinery, netting an entire large vineyard is possible in a reasonable amount of time.
