How to make your own customized grow net for your orchard.

What is Grow Net and how it will improve your crop yields?

Grow net is an equipment which gardeners make use of in supporting their plants and helping the plants to stand upright. It comprises of a ten  by ten inches square and can be bought in various sizes. This netting at the end stretches and is tied to some form of a frame in order to allow the vining plants to grow in an upward or vertical way rather than spreading everywhere on the ground. Making this net is not as hard as one may think, so let’s show you what you need if you decide to make yours instead of buying.

The Process of Building a Growing Net

  • The rebar should be drive into the ground measuring two feet. The position for this is where you will put the trellis. Perhaps you are use a bed that is raise, you can find out the best place to put the rebar.
  • The next step is measuring and marking the height of the trellis that you want on the conduit.
  • Twist the conduit within an angle of 90 degrees. If the bending of the conduit is new, then you have to assign notch for the beginning of the bend.
  • Both pieces of the conduit should be placed on the rebar and straighten the pieces for joining. This will be dependent on the raised bed size and might require some cutting down. At times, it is much easier and technical if you measure and cut, but there is no much time to do that.
  • Once you are done with the cutting of the conduit to shape, join it using a coupling. For a perfect fitting, you need to adjust the bends or twists.
  • Lay the frame on the ground after removing it from the rebar. At this point, you open the trellis and unwrap it. This will have the appearance of a jumbled mess of spaghetti.
  • There is a nylon string, which is about 2 inches in length for the edge of the growing net. Begin from the twisted corner, work down, and crossway as you tie the corner to the frame.
  • You will need to cut off the trellis netting once you are at the end of the frame
At this point, you can keep the new frame on top the rebar while you wait for the vining plants to move towards that direction. These vining plants need to be trained as they grow.
peppers on grow netting
HORTOMALLAS® grow netting is easy to use on peppers grown both in the open field or in a greenhouse.

One of the benefits of the grow-netting system is that in few months a wall of green can be seen and can act as a privacy screen.

You can carry out this process by yourself while not spending more than $20 bucks out of pocket and most importantly it takes less than an hour.  Of course this article is geared towards the backyard gardener who sees gardening as a way to relax and meditate in action.  For commercial farming operations this sort of custom made trellising system is not cost effective, so large farmers prefer using HORTOMALLAS® trellis netting.
